Biography of Michael Bryan
Michael Bryan was an English collector and connoisseur of art. He first arrived in London in 1781 and married the sister of the Earl of Shrewsbury, which allowed him to enter the highest circles of English society. He spent many years in continental Europe, forming and acquiring art collections for the English nobility.
In 1804, Bryan retired from his pursuits and settled in his brother's estate in Yorkshire. It was during this time that he began working on his life's major work, "Dictionary of Painters and Engravers, Biographical and Critical." The first edition of this work was published in 1816. Continually updated and revised, this work is still being reprinted to this day.
