Michael Constantine, born Constantine Ioannides on May 22, 1927, in Reading, Pennsylvania, is an American television and film actor. He comes from a Greek immigrant family, with parents Andromache Efstratiou and Theoharis Ioannides. Constantine began his acting career in the early 1950s on the New York theater scene, where he served as a double for Paul Muni in the courtroom drama "Inherit the Wind." He also had a brief appearance in a 1949 episode of the television series "The Big Story." Constantine studied acting under the renowned mentor Howard Da Silva, mastering his craft and performing both on Broadway and elsewhere.

Constantine gained recognition for his ability to mimic various foreign accents, including French, Italian, and Russian. He is best known for his role as Kostas 'Gus' Portokalos, a typical Greek patriarch and the father of the main character Toula Portokalos, portrayed by Nia Vardalos, in the hit 2002 romantic comedy "My Big Fat Greek Wedding." Prior to this breakthrough, Constantine appeared regularly on television, with one of his most notable roles being long-suffering high school principal Seymour Kaufman in the comedy series "Room 222," which aired from 1969-1974 on ABC. For his portrayal of Kaufman, Constantine received an Emmy Award for "Outstanding Supporting Actor."
