Biography of Shiv Nadar
Shiv Nadar, the President of HCL Technologies, is an Indian entrepreneur, IT specialist, educator, and one of the richest people in India. He was born in 1946 in India to a family that owned a decent business. Nadar pursued his education at PSG College of Technology and obtained a scientific degree in 1968. He then began his career at DCM, working in the calculator development department.
After a short while, Shiv Nadar founded his own company, called "Microcomp," where he started selling microcomputers under the brand name "Micro2200" in the Indian market. The company quickly became a leader in this field. In 1976, Nadar established HCL Technologies, investing heavily in its development. During that time, the company focused all its efforts on creating a state-of-the-art personal computer.
At that time, the government of India had policies aimed at developing its own market and manufacturers, leading many foreign companies, including IBM, to leave the country. This provided immense opportunities for Indian computer developers. In 1980, HCL Technologies expanded its production to Singapore, generating approximately $1 million in revenue annually.
By 1984, the Indian computer market achieved significant success, prompting the government to open the country for the import of computer technology. By 1987, HCL Technologies had become the leader in computer technology in the Indian market. Shiv Nadar aimed to take his company to the global stage and made an attempt to enter the American market in 1989. However, he misjudged the market requirements and couldn't meet the demand.
In the mid-1990s, Shiv Nadar secured major contracts with renowned companies such as Ericsson and Nokia to supply their products to the Indian market. This led to the establishment of numerous branches across the country, expanding the company's activities beyond computer development to include software and IT technologies. As a result, five major companies emerged under Shiv Nadar's leadership, covering all areas of the computer industry.
Currently, Shiv Nadar is one of the wealthiest individuals in India, with an estimated fortune of $3.9 billion.
