Grigori Roshal: A Biographical Sketch

Early Life and Education

Grigori Roshal was born in Russia to Faysh Abievich Dubson, a physician. Roshal pursued his legal studies at Moscow State University between 1916 and 1920.

Berlin Years

From 1925 to 1930, Roshal worked as a lawyer in the Soviet trade mission in Berlin. During this period, he developed a keen interest in filmmaking and visited German film studios. In 1929, he directed two films in Germany: "Zwei Brüder" (Two Brothers) and "Giftgas" (Poison Gas).

Return to the Soviet Union

Upon returning to the Soviet Union in 1930, Roshal began his career as a film director with "Mezhdrabpomfilm." In 1933, he joined "Lenfilm."

Political Turmoil and Arrest

In 1938, Roshal was arrested during the Stalinist purges. He was released in 1939 after the change of the People's Commissar for Internal Affairs.

Roshal's first wife was Hilda Jennings.
