Biography of Michael Eugene Porter

Michael Eugene Porter is an American economist and professor at Harvard Business School. He is a leading expert in the field of competitive strategy, competitiveness, and economic development of countries and regions. Porter's works have been recognized by governments, corporations, and academic circles worldwide. He currently leads a program at Harvard Business School designed for new CEOs of large corporations.

Early Life and Education

Michael Porter was born in 1947 in Ann Arbor, Michigan. As the son of an army officer, he traveled throughout the country during his childhood. In his high school years, he earned the title of "best player" in American football and baseball in the state of New Jersey, where he attended school. In 1969, Porter graduated with honors from Princeton University, majoring in aerospace engineering and mechanical engineering. He played golf for the university league and became the New England champion. He also became a member of two prestigious student societies, Phi Beta Kappa and Tau Beta Pi.

In 1971, Porter received a Master of Business Administration degree from Harvard Business School, and two years later, he obtained a doctoral degree in economics from Harvard University.

Career and Contributions

After completing his education, Porter served in the United States Army and reached the rank of captain before transitioning to the reserves. He has always had an interest in aesthetics and business administration in the art, music, and painting industries, collaborating on strategic matters with various artistic organizations. Currently, Professor Porter resides in Brookline, Massachusetts, and is married with two daughters.

Porter has authored 18 books and numerous articles, including "Competitive Strategy," "Competitive Advantage," and "Competitive Advantage of Nations." He is the six-time recipient of the McKinsey Award for the best article of the year in the Harvard Business Review and is the most cited author in the fields of business and economics.

Porter's primary research focuses on competition and company strategy. He is considered the founder of modern strategy, and his ideas are taught in business schools worldwide. However, he also addresses a wide range of issues, including competitiveness, economic development, economically disadvantaged urban communities, environmental protection, and the role of corporations in society.

In recent years, Porter has dedicated significant attention to solving healthcare problems in the United States and other countries, developing new strategic approaches to improve the quality of products and services, and overall healthcare system reform.

Consulting and Influence

In addition to his writing, research, and teaching, Porter serves as a consultant to various business, government, and public organizations. He has been a strategic advisor to companies such as Caterpillar, Procter & Gamble, Scotts Miracle-Gro, Royal Dutch Shell, and Taiwan Semiconductor. He has served on the boards of directors of Thermo Fisher Scientific and Parametric Technology Corporation.

Porter plays an important role in US economic policy and works with governments of other countries. Currently, he advises the presidents of Rwanda and South Korea. In 2006, Porter conducted research in Russia, resulting in a report for the country's government.

Since 2000, Porter has been one of the 23 honorary professors at Harvard University. He is also one of the founders, senior partners, and directors of the consulting company, The Monitor Group.
