Biography of William Arnold Barnett

Early Life and Education

William Arnold Barnett was born in 1941 in Boston, Massachusetts. He received his Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering and Industrial Management from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in 1963. In 1965, he earned his Master of Business Administration degree from the University of California, Berkeley. He then went on to obtain a Master's degree in Economics from Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania in 1970, and completed his doctoral dissertation in Statistics and Economics at the same institution in 1974.

Professional Career

During his time as a student, Barnett worked as an intern at General Motors in Rochester. From 1973 to 1981, he conducted research in economics at the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System in Washington, D.C. He also served as a research assistant at the Graduate School of Business Administration, University of Chicago from 1977 to 1980. Barnett held various teaching positions throughout his career, including a professorship at the University of Washington from 1990 to 2002, at the University of Texas at Austin from 1982 to 1990, and currently as a distinguished professor of Macroeconomics at the University of Kansas since August 2008. He has also been invited to lecture at institutions such as Johns Hopkins University, Université de Droit D'Économie in Aix-en-Provence, France, Monash University in Clayton, Victoria, Australia, and Duke University in Durham, North Carolina.

Contributions and Achievements

Barnett is a leading researcher in macroeconomics and econometrics, specializing in the study of chaos theory, bifurcation theory, and nonlinear systems in a socio-economic context, as well as aggregation issues. He has published 20 books as an author or editor, and over 140 articles in professional journals. His works have been translated into seven languages. Barnett has received numerous professional awards and honors throughout his career. He serves as the editor of the monograph series "International Symposia in Economic Theory and Econometrics" published by Emerald Group Publishing Limited, as well as the editor of the journal "Macroeconomic Dynamics" published by Cambridge University Press. He co-edited the book "Inside the Economist's Mind: Conversations with Eminent Economists" with Nobel laureate Paul A. Samuelson.
