The Skydiver Who Cheated Death
Michael Holmes, a British extreme sports skydiver, made global headlines in 2006 after surviving a 15,000-foot (4.5 km) fall without a functioning parachute.
Early Life and Career
Born in 1982, Holmes made his first tandem skydive at age 16 and had logged over 1,000 jumps by the age of 19. He became a licensed skydiver in 2000 and also worked as a videographer and competed in skydiving events.
The Miraculous Fall
On December 2006, Holmes's name became etched in history when he defied seemingly impossible odds in New Zealand. During a skydiving jump, his parachute became entangled, and his reserve chute failed to deploy. He plummeted over 4,000 meters (13,000 feet) to the ground, witnessed by horrified onlookers. Remarkably, a camera mounted on Holmes's helmet captured the entire harrowing ordeal.
Landing and Rescue
As Holmes hurtled towards the earth at speeds of around 100 km/h (62 mph), he rotated uncontrollably. Miraculously, he landed in a gorse bush that cushioned his impact. He was found unconscious but alive and was eventually extracted by firefighters and airlifted to a hospital.

After regaining consciousness, Holmes spoke to reporters from his hospital bed. He recounted how he initially remained hopeful after the main parachute malfunctioned but resigned himself to his fate when the backup failed.
Continued Legacy
Despite the near-death experience, Holmes did not give up skydiving and continues to jump to this day. He resides in Taupo, New Zealand, where he trains and coaches other skydivers.
