Biography of Michael Ilitch
Early Life and CareerMichael Ilitch was born on July 20, 1929, in Detroit, Michigan. He attended Cooley High School and later served in the United States Marine Corps for four years. After completing his military service, Ilitch returned to Detroit and was offered a three-year contract with the Detroit Tigers baseball team, including a $3,000 bonus. He played several seasons with the Tigers before a severe knee injury forced him to retire from sports.
Business Ventures
Following his sports career, Ilitch turned to business. He began by making and selling pizzas, and with the help of his wife, Marian, he opened a small restaurant called "Little Caesars Pizza Treat" in Garden City, Michigan. This marked the humble beginnings of his vast restaurant empire.
Ilitch Holdings, Inc.
In 1999, Ilitch established Ilitch Holdings, Inc., a diversified services company. He served as its chairman. In 2007, the company's revenue reached $1.8 billion, and in 2006, Ilitch ranked 242nd on Forbes magazine's list of the wealthiest Americans.
Family and Legacy
Michael Ilitch and his wife, Marian, have seven children. In 2000, their son Christopher was appointed president and CEO of Ilitch Holdings. Their daughter Denise served as the company's general counsel. A competitive sibling rivalry for the company's leadership role culminated in Christopher's appointment as CEO and president in July 2004. Denise left the family business to establish her own law firm.
