Early Life
Born John Lee on October 20, 1978, in Perth, Western Australia, John Lee's musical journey began in his youth. As a teenager, he performed as Geppetto in the Royal Theatre's production of "Pinocchio" and sang in the chorus of "Anything Goes" at His Majesty's Theatre. He attended Newman College in Perth before moving to the United States in 1997 on a tennis scholarship.
Musical Beginnings
John Lee's musical ambitions led him to pursue a career after dropping out of college after two quarters. He played in the Australian rules football league for the Atlanta Kookaburras from 2001 to 2002 while continuing to play music.
Solo Success and The Rising
In 2002, he signed with Maverick Records as Michael Lee, his birth name, and worked on an album. He subsequently formed a rock band called The Rising. Their song "Cradle" received radio play, and their album "Future Unknown" was released in 2003. After leaving Maverick, he was briefly signed by Columbia before embracing the stage name "Michael Johns" in 2006.
