Professional Hockey Career
Draft and Early YearsBrendan Shanahan was drafted 76th overall by the Detroit Red Wings in the 1991 NHL Entry Draft. He made his official NHL debut with the team in 1994.
NHL Journey
Shanahan played for several teams throughout his career, including the Detroit Red Wings, New York Rangers, Boston Bruins, Philadelphia Flyers, and Washington Capitals. He was a key member of the Red Wings' Stanley Cup-winning team in 1998.
Return to Philadelphia
In 2004, Shanahan signed as an unrestricted free agent with the Philadelphia Flyers, where he spent four seasons before joining the Washington Capitals in 2009.
Later Years and Retirement
In 2012, the Capitals announced their decision to part ways with Shanahan. After the NHL lockout, he briefly returned to the Flyers in 2013 as an unrestricted free agent. Shanahan retired from professional hockey in 2014.
International Career
Shanahan represented the United States in four World Championships (1995, 1999, 2001, 2005) and the 2006 Olympic Winter Games.
