Biography of Michael Michalsky
Early Life and EducationMichael Michalsky, a German fashion designer, was born on February 23, 1967, in Göttingen. He studied at the London College of Fashion until 1992.
A Unique Perspective on Fashion
After completing his education, Michalsky decided to fulfill a promise he made to himself and worked in a hospice. It was during this time that he personally experienced death for the first time, leading him to realize that the latest fashion trends and associations with influential figures held no value without a genuine understanding of the world. Michalsky's main source of inspiration has always been music, and he was greatly influenced by the youth culture of the 1980s in London, where the convergence of music and fashion became more prominent through music videos and the success of MTV. Madonna remains one of his main idols.
Exploration of Other Art Forms
Apart from fashion, Michalsky also has a strong interest in photography and architecture. He has a notable collection of works by Yva, a popular German photographer from the early 20th century.
Professional Career
After university, Michalsky became the managing designer of the design department at Levi Strauss & Co. From 1995 until the spring of 2006, he worked at Adidas AG, where he held the position of Chief Creative Officer for six years. During this time, Michalsky collaborated with Yohji Yamamoto, Stella McCartney, and rapper Missy Elliott. He also relaunched several old projects of the company as part of a retro program for the label.
Establishing His Own Brand
In May 2005, Michalsky was approached by agents from the Korean company Sungjoo to restore the faded image of the fashion brand MCM. In 2006, he created his own label, MICHALSKY, and presented his first fashion show to the world in January 2007. Currently, Michalsky showcases his new collections twice a year at the Mercedes Benz Berlin Fashion Week. In addition to his work with MICHALSKY and MCM, he has also developed sportswear for the Chinese company KAPPA, which is now owned by Dongxiang.
A True Designer of Lifestyle
Michalsky collaborates with several companies and often involves them in new projects for his own label. His range of fashion creations is incredibly diverse, catering to both affluent customers and the middle class. The core collection of his label leans toward high fashion, blending classic styles with streetwear influences. In addition to clothing and bags, Michalsky has expanded into eyewear and perfumes. He considers himself more of a designer of his customers' lifestyle rather than just an artist, and his company's philosophy can be summed up as "Real clothes for real people."
