Early Life and Career
Michael Patrick King was born in Scranton, Pennsylvania, on September 14, 1954. He initially pursued acting in New York City during the 1980s but found limited success. He then shifted focus to writing and stand-up comedy.
Breakthrough with "Murphy Brown"
King's writing talent was recognized when he was hired as a writer and executive producer on the sitcom "Murphy Brown," which aired for 10 seasons. He received his first Emmy Award nomination in 1993 for his work on the show.
"Will & Grace" and Early Directing
King continued to develop his writing and producing skills on "Cybill" and "Will & Grace," where he made his directorial debut in 1993 with an episode of the short-lived series "Good Advice."
"Sex and the City"
In 1998, producer Darren Star adapted Candace Bushnell's "Sex and the City" newspaper column into a television series and hired King as a writer and executive producer. King played a crucial role in shaping the characters of Carrie Bradshaw (Sarah Jessica Parker), Samantha Jones (Kim Cattrall), Charlotte York (Kristin Davis), and Miranda Hobbes (Cynthia Nixon) as strong, independent women who openly discussed their relationships.
"Sex and the City" Legacy
Running for six seasons, "Sex and the City" became a cultural phenomenon and garnered seven Emmy Awards, eight Golden Globes, and numerous other accolades. King received two Emmy Awards for directing and three Producers Guild Awards for his work on the series.
Post-"Sex and the City" Projects
After "Sex and the City," King collaborated with Lisa Kudrow on the comedy "The Comeback" in 2005. The series received mixed reviews but praised Kudrow's performance. He also directed and wrote the 2007 film adaptation of "Sex and the City."
Current and Future Projects
In 2010, King wrote, produced, and directed the sequel, "Sex and the City 2." He has continued to work on various projects, including the upcoming second sequel to "Sex and the City." King has also made occasional acting appearances, notably in episodes of "Curb Your Enthusiasm" and "Sex and the City." He is openly gay.
