Michael Joseph Perry was born on September 11, 1991, in Flint, Michigan. Growing up in a predominantly African American community, Perry experienced racial tension and participated in several interracial fights. At the age of 11, he began boxing, but his athletic career was short-lived. He was arrested for possession of a controlled substance and sentenced to probation, which was later revoked after Perry's involvement in a burglary.

After serving time in prison, Perry worked as a coach at a UFC gym in Winter Springs, Florida. Inspired by his progress in physical conditioning, he decided to pursue a career in fighting and trained at the Jackson-Wink MMA Academy under the guidance of Greg Jackson.
