Early Life and Background

Michael Craig Russell, an American tennis player, was born on May 1, 1978, in Detroit, Michigan. He started playing tennis at the age of five and was trained by his father, George Russell, who was a former amateur tennis player for the University of Michigan. His mother, Carole Russell, is an English language teacher. Michael grew up in Michigan but spent his final years of high school in Tampa, Florida, attending Saddlebrook High School. During his graduation ceremony, Russell was chosen to deliver the farewell speech.

Tennis Career and Achievements

In 1998, Russell turned professional and has since participated in all the Grand Slam tournaments. His highest ranking was 60th in the world, achieved on August 13, 2007. As of August 15, 2011, he is ranked 93rd in the world. Throughout his career, Russell has earned a total of $1,314,085 in prize money.
