Early Life and Education

Mikhail Mikhailovich Klimenko was born on May 1, 1909, in Aleksandrovsk-Grushevsky, Rostov Oblast, Russia. He joined the Red Army in September 1929 and graduated from the Odessa Artillery School in 1932. He later completed advanced training courses at the Military Academy of Mechanization and Motorization and the Military Academy named after M.V. Frunze.

Military Service

Pre-World War II

After graduating from the Odessa Artillery School, Klimenko served in various artillery and tank units. He commanded a platoon, battery, company, and staff of a tank battalion in the 21st Tank Brigade. In 1940, he became assistant chief of the 1st Department of the Armored Forces Administration of the Western Military District.

World War II

Initial Engagements

At the outbreak of World War II, Klimenko was assistant chief of the 1st Department of the Armored Forces Administration. He fought in the 147th and 18th Tank Brigades on the Western Front.

In March 1942, Klimenko was appointed commander of the 29th Tank Brigade, which was deployed on the Volkhov Front. The brigade played a crucial role in the Moscow Offensive and the attempt to break through to the encircled 2nd Shock Army.

Later Service

From August 1943, Klimenko commanded the 122nd Tank Brigade. In January 1944, he participated in the Leningrad-Luga Offensive with the 59th Army. He subsequently commanded the 213th Independent Tank Brigade on the 3rd Belarusian Front.

Death and Legacy

Klimenko was killed in action on October 16, 1944, during the fighting to enter East Prussia. He was posthumously awarded the Order of the Patriotic War, 1st class. Klimenko is remembered for his exceptional bravery and leadership during World War II.
