Michał Wywiórski
Early Life and EducationMichał Wywiórski was born to a Russian officer, Pavel Gorski, and a Polish woman, Józefa Wywórska. Despite his father's heritage, Wywiórski always considered himself a Pole. He initially studied chemistry at the Riga Polytechnic Institute and later at the University of Zurich. It was in Switzerland that he began to paint as a hobby.
Formal Training and Influences
From 1883 to 1887, Wywiórski pursued formal painting studies at the Munich Academy of Fine Arts. He studied under professors RaUpp and GySis and spent time in the private studios of Józef Brandt and Alfred Wierusz-Kowalski. These experiences greatly influenced his artistic style.
Artistic Travels and Settling in Poznań
Wywiórski traveled extensively throughout Europe. He resided in Munich until 1896, then moved to Berlin. Finally, in 1904, he settled in Poznań, where he established his permanent home.
Genre Painting and Oriental Themes
Initially, Wywiórski focused on genre painting, often depicting oriental subjects. Around 1890, he shifted his attention to landscapes. His talent was recognized by the acclaimed panorama painters Wojciech Kossak, Julian Fałat, and Jan Styka, who invited him to collaborate on creating the scenic backdrops for their massive artworks.
Seascapes and Success
Michał Wywiórski also gained renown for his exquisite marine landscapes. His paintings captured the beauty and power of the sea, earning him widespread critical acclaim.
