Early Life and Education

Born in Belgium, American pianist André Block emigrated with his family to Mexico as a child before settling in the United States. He studied under Wolfgang Rosé and later enrolled at the Juilliard School.

International Acclaim

In 1960, at the Warsaw International Chopin Piano Competition, Arthur Rubinstein, dissatisfied with the jury's decision, awarded Block his own personal prize. Two years later, Block triumphed in the prestigious Leventritt Competition, showcasing his "variety and virtuosity," as noted by Time magazine.

Career and Teaching

Despite his early success, Block performed relatively infrequently. From 1978 to 1997, he held a teaching position at the Indiana University School of Music.

Recordings and Critical Reception

Block's repertoire included works by Chopin, Schumann, Albéniz, Granados, Franck, Rachmaninoff, and Scriabin, as well as Liszt's transcriptions of Bach's organ preludes and fugues. Critics praised his studio recordings from the 1980s for their "ludicrously slow tempos," which added an eccentric touch to his interpretations.

Compositions

In addition to his recordings, Block composed a number of short piano pieces.
