Early Life and Education

Born in São Tomé and Príncipe, Viana da Motta began his musical journey at the Lisbon Conservatory. In 1882, he embarked on a formative journey to Berlin, studying with the esteemed pianists Xaver and Philipp Scharwenka. His musical explorations continued in Weimar in 1885 under the guidance of Franz Liszt and in Frankfurt in 1887 with Hans von Bülow, whose "Lectures" he later supplemented in 1896.

International Acclaim and Pedagogy

Viana da Motta's exceptional talent propelled him to international stardom. He embarked on extensive concert tours throughout Europe and America, captivating audiences with his virtuosic performances. Alongside his musical endeavors, he also held teaching positions in Berlin, including the renowned Stern Conservatory.

Return to Portugal and Directorship

In 1915, Viana da Motta received an invitation to teach at the Geneva Conservatory. However, he soon returned to his beloved Portugal in 1918, where he was appointed director of the Lisbon Conservatory. He held this position until 1938, all the while continuing his concert career. In 1927, he achieved remarkable recognition by performing all 32 Beethoven piano sonatas to mark the 100th anniversary of the composer's death.

Viana da Motta's compositional output primarily focused on his early years, culminating in the renowned symphony "À Pátria" (To the Homeland) in 1908. His passion for musicology remained constant throughout his life. Notable late publications include his biography of Liszt ("Vida de Liszt," 1945) and the two-volume work "Música e músicos alemães" (Music and German Musicians, 1947).
