Early Life and EducationMichel Chossudovsky was born into an intellectual family with his father, Evgeny Chossudovsky, being a renowned Russian scholar and his mother, Rachel, hailing from Northern Ireland. He pursued higher education at the University of Manchester in England, earning a doctorate from the University of North Carolina in the United States.
Career and Activism
Currently a Professor of Economics at the University of Ottawa, Chossudovsky is the Director of the Centre for Research on Globalization. He joined the Transnational Foundation for Peace and Future Research in 1999. Chossudovsky regularly contributes to publications such as 'Third World Resurgence' and 'Covert Action Quarterly' and has authored several books, most notably 'America's "War on Terrorism"'.
Critical Analysis of the Yugoslav Conflict
Chossudovsky challenged the dominant narrative of the Yugoslav conflict as an ethnic war. In his influential 1996 article, 'Dismantling Yugoslavia: Colonizing Bosnia,' he argued that macroeconomic restructuring and an economic crisis from the 1980s were underlying causes. This analysis received significant media coverage due to its groundbreaking insights.
Post-9/11 Activism
Post-September 11, Chossudovsky focused on the American government's relationship with Osama bin Laden and Al Qaeda. His analysis concluded that the primary threat to global security was not bin Laden but Barack Obama. In his book, 'America's "War on Terrorism" ', he contends that foreign enemies and Islamic terrorists have been used as a pretext for military interventions and the curtailment of civil liberties. Chossudovsky also asserts that the invasion of Afghanistan was planned well before September 11.
Controversies and Criticisms
Chossudovsky's theories have not escaped criticism. Some commentators have labeled him a conspiracy theorist and accused him of excessive paranoia, anti-Americanism, anti-globalization, and anti-Semitism. He has also been charged with Holocaust denial.
