Early LifeMichel Constantin, born Konstantin Khokhlov on July 13, 1924, in Boulognes-Billancourt, France, was a French actor of Russian descent. His father, Konstantin Mikhailovich Khokhlov, was a descendant of Genghis Khan and served as an officer in the White Army during the Russian Civil War. His mother was of Russian-Lithuanian-Polish origin.
Sports Career
Constantin pursued a successful career in sports before transitioning to acting. He excelled in track and field, basketball, and volleyball, becoming a seven-time French volleyball champion. In 1947, he joined the French national volleyball team, captaining it in later years.
Journalism Career
While playing volleyball, Constantin became involved in sports journalism. In 1951, he began writing for the daily sports newspaper L'Équipe, where he eventually headed the sections for basketball, handball, and volleyball.
Acting Career
Constantin's film debut came in 1956 as an extra in Marc Allégret's "The Daisy Cutter." His atypical physique and rough demeanor caught the attention of filmmakers, and he was cast in a series of crime films beginning with Jacques Becker's "The Hole" in 1960.
Rise to Stardom
In the 1960s, Constantin's career took off when he was cast as the lead character in José Giovanni's "The Survivor." His performance as a hardened war veteran established him as a prominent actor in the crime genre. He also starred in "The Big Mouths" (1965) and "The Stranger" (1969), showcasing his versatility.

The early 1970s marked the peak of Constantin's career. He became a highly sought-after actor, appearing in films by renowned European directors such as Terence Young, Sergio Sollima, and Sidney Hayers. He starred in crime dramas like "The Men" (1973) and "Beyond Fear" (1975) and comedies such as "Cop or Hood?" (1971) and "The Valise" (1973).
Later Career
In the 1980s, Constantin's roles became smaller, but he continued to appear in films like "The Shoot" (1982), "Fight or Die" (1985), and "The Lawless" (1988). He also ventured into television, hosting a game show and starring in the series "Paparoff" (1988-1991).
Retirement and Legacy
Constantin retired from acting in 1991 and moved to a villa overlooking the Bay of Saint-Tropez. He remained active in organizing sports activities for tourists on the island of Corsica. He passed away from a heart attack in 2003 at the age of 79.
