Michele Amari: Italian Patriot, Historian, and Politician

Michele Amari (1806-1889) was a renowned Italian patriot, historian, and politician. His contributions to the fields of Eastern history and the history of Sicily left an enduring mark on Italian historiography.

Early Life and Education

Born in Palermo, Sicily, in 1806, Amari received his education in law and literature. His early interest in the history of his native island led him to pursue further studies in Arabic and Persian languages.

Literary Career

As a historian, Amari focused on the medieval period of Sicily, particularly the era of Muslim rule. He became one of the earliest translators of medieval Arabic texts, making them accessible to Western scholars. His most significant work, "Storia dei Musulmani di Sicilia" ("History of the Muslims in Sicily"), published in 1854, gained international recognition and was translated into several languages.

Political Involvement

Amari's patriotism and deep understanding of Sicily's history made him a key figure in the Risorgimento, the movement for Italian unification. He served as a mediator between Count Camillo Benso di Cavour, the architect of Italian unification, and influential Sicilians, persuading them to support the cause.

Disappointment and Legacy

Amari had high hopes that Cavour would grant Sicily regional autonomy after unification. However, Cavour's policies favored northern Italy, and his refusal to support Sicilian autonomy fueled resentment and deepened the historical divide between northern and southern Italy.

Despite this disappointment, Amari's contributions to Italian historiography remain invaluable. His groundbreaking work on medieval Sicily and the history of Muslim rule in the Mediterranean established him as one of the most important historians of his time. His legacy as a patriot and scholar continues to inspire and inform generations of Italians.
