Ivan Krypiakevych: A Distinguished Ukrainian Historian and Academician

Early Life and Education

Ivan Krypiakevych was born in Lviv on June 25 (July 7), 1886. In 1908, he graduated from Lviv University, where he studied under the renowned historian Mykhailo Hrushevsky.

Academic Career

Krypiakevych became a member of the Historical and Philosophical Section of the Shevchenko Scientific Society in 1911. Upon Western Ukraine's annexation by the USSR in 1939, he became a professor and head of the history department at Lviv University. From 1947 to 1948, he worked in Kyiv. In 1948, he was appointed senior research fellow at the Museum of Ethnography and Art Industries of the Academy of Sciences of the Ukrainian SSR in Lviv. In 1951, he became head of the department of Ukrainian history at the Institute of Social Sciences of the Academy of Sciences of the Ukrainian SSR in Lviv. From 1953 until his death, he served as the institute's director.

Academic Focus

Krypiakevych's research primarily focused on the history of Ukraine during the feudal period. During his Soviet period, he dedicated extensive work to the history of the war led by Bohdan Khmelnytsky.

Awards and Recognition

In 1958, Krypiakevych was elected an academician of the Academy of Sciences of the Ukrainian SSR. In 1961, he was awarded the title of Honored Scientist of the Ukrainian SSR.

Legacy

Ivan Krypiakevych passed away in Lviv on April 21, 1967. He was buried in Lychakiv Cemetery. In 1991, a street in Lviv and a street in Vynnyky, a town within Lviv, were renamed in his honor. In 1993, the Institute of Social Sciences that he had headed was renamed the I. Krypiakevych Institute of Ukrainian Studies.
