Mitchell Carter: A Rising Star in Shot Put
Early Life and Family BackgroundMitchell Carter was born on October 12, 1985, in San Jose, California. Her father, Michael Carter, was an NFL football player and a silver medalist in the 1979 Pan American Games. Carter's father also set the shot put record at his high school in 1979.
High School and College Career
Carter attended Red Oak High School in Texas, where she excelled in shot put. She won the state championship multiple times and was a prominent track and field athlete. In 2003, Carter graduated from high school and enrolled at Texas A&M University.
International Success
During her time at Texas A&M, Carter began to make a mark on the international stage. In 2001, she placed second at the World Youth Championships. She also improved her personal best at the Texas state championships.
In 2002, Carter won the Pan Am Juniors title and placed third in the national junior championships. She also took first place at the USA Junior Olympics.
Elite-Level Competition
Carter continued to excel throughout her college and early professional career. In 2003, she set a school record of 16.73 meters at the Texas state championships. She also won the national junior championships and the Pan Am Juniors.
In 2004, Carter became a world champion at the World Junior Championships, improving her personal best to 17.55 meters.
Olympic Debut
In 2008, Carter qualified for the Beijing Olympics. She represented the United States in the shot put, a category that no American had medaled in since 1960.
Current Status
Carter currently trains with Beverley Kearney. She does not have a sports agent or belong to a specific club.
