Unique Case: Twins Born to a Twin Mother

Michelle Cooke and her sister Sarah are identical twins. It is not uncommon for twins to have twins themselves, but what makes Michelle's case unique is that her twin daughters are also identical. When Michelle became pregnant, she never imagined that this would happen. She and Sarah would joke about it, saying, "What if history repeats itself?" But they never seriously considered the possibility. Then, one day, the doctor delivered the surprising news: "You will be having twins!"

The Rarity of Identical Twins

Identical twins, also known as monozygotic twins, are formed from a single fertilized egg that splits after conception. This results in babies who look exactly alike. Cases of identical twins are already rare, occurring in only 3 out of every 1,000 births. The chances of this phenomenon repeating in the second generation are even more unlikely.

A Joyful Surprise for Michelle

Michelle, a 33-year-old resident of Cobham, Surrey, England, was overjoyed when she discovered she was pregnant. However, she and her 39-year-old husband, Pete, were concerned about the progress of the pregnancy. So, Michelle decided to undergo a check-up with her gynecologist at 8 weeks pregnant. During the examination, she asked the doctor if she could hear the heartbeat. Michelle was in complete shock when the doctor replied, "I can clearly hear the beating of two little hearts." She immediately called her husband, who laughed, thinking she was joking.

Identical Twins Confirmed

At 12 weeks pregnant, Michelle had a routine ultrasound examination that showed the twins were identical and shared the same placenta. To prevent potential complications, she had to undergo examinations every two weeks. Michelle explains, "It was another shock for us to learn that the twins were identical. Our families refused to believe it."

Welcoming the Twin Girls

Michelle and Pete already had a daughter named Evie. In September, they welcomed their long-awaited additions, twin girls named Elsie and Marni. The babies were delivered via cesarean section at Kingston Hospital in Surrey. Marni weighed 5 pounds 2 ounces, while Elsie weighed 4 pounds 7 ounces. The babies looked so similar that Michelle had to paint Marni's toenail pink to tell them apart.

A Mother's Relief

"It was a huge relief to know that our daughters were born healthy. Our entire family was worried for us," Michelle shares. She hopes that the girls will have the same emotional closeness that she and her sister share. Sarah, too, is happy in her family life, raising two children with her partner James.

A Rare Phenomenon

The spokesperson for The Twins and Multiple Births Association (TAMBA) notes that the propensity for identical twins is not passed down from generation to generation but occurs spontaneously. The occurrence of identical twins being born in two consecutive generations is incredibly rare.
