Biography of Michiko Koshino
Michiko Koshino is a renowned Japanese fashion designer and the owner of several high-end stores in Japan and London. She was born in Osaka, Japan, and grew up in a family of three children. All three siblings went on to have successful careers in the fashion industry, thanks in large part to their mother, who owned a fashion boutique. Koshino herself started working at her mother's store at a young age, gaining invaluable experience in the fashion industry.
In 1974, Koshino graduated from college, specializing in design. Shortly after completing her studies, she moved to London to pursue her passion professionally. She opened her first store in Covent Garden, which was designed to resemble a dance hall and even featured DJ tables. In 1987, Koshino launched her popular menswear line, "Motorking," which became highly sought after by celebrities such as David Bowie and Moby.
Around the same time, Koshino also developed a women's clothing line called "Q tee," known for its urban street style. Her clothing became incredibly popular, and Koshino expanded her brand to include cosmetics, lingerie, eyewear, and various accessories. Her products were sold in Asia, Europe, and the United States, but her clothing line remained her biggest success. In Japan, her limited edition denim collection called "Yen denim" caused a sensation.
Celebrities such as the Spice Girls, Placebo, and Natalie Imbruglia were often seen wearing Koshino's designs. Currently, her most well-known projects include her main brand, "Michiko London," as well as collaborations with companies such as "Sudo" for wool and acrylic scarves, "Ta Feng" for umbrellas, "Shin Myung Mool San" for lighters, "Chiyoda Bussan" for footwear, "Mandom" for cosmetics, "Gunze" for accessories, and "Mitsubishi Rayon" for everyday clothing. Koshino also actively participated in the development of an environmentally-friendly scooter for Honda.
Koshino is known for her special "night sets," which are meticulously crafted combinations of outfits and accessories for clubbing. She is considered one of the leading fashion influencers among modern clubbers. Her name even adorns condoms, showcasing her widespread popularity. Koshino finds inspiration in the streets and nightclubs, often drawing from popular melodies of the 80s and 90s. Her projects help young people create stylish and well-rounded looks, paying attention to the smallest details.
Despite her success and immense popularity, Koshino refuses to rest on her laurels. She constantly strives to create something new and unique, experimenting with innovative color and style choices and using unconventional materials. Unlike many Japanese designers, Koshino doesn't limit herself to copying popular trends; instead, she aims to always create something truly original. Her garments combine incredible comfort with unexpected sensuality, making them highly sought after among fashion-forward youth.
