Biography of Mitiyo Morishima

Mitiyo Morishima was a Japanese economist, mathematician, and econometrics specialist, as well as the author of numerous professional publications. He served as a faculty member at the London School of Economics from 1970 to 1988, holding the position of Professor of Economics. Morishima was also an Honorary Professor at Osaka University and a member of the British Academy. He was awarded the Order of the Rising Sun, one of Japan's highest civil honors. His research interests lay in the fields of general equilibrium theory, history of economic thought, and the capitalist economic system.

Early Life and Education

Mitiyo Morishima was born on July 18, 1923, in Osaka, Japan. He studied economics and sociology under the guidance of prominent Japanese economist and sociologist Yasuma Takada. In 1946, Morishima graduated from the Faculty of Economics at Kyoto University and soon embarked on his academic career.

Academic Career

In 1948, he secured a position as an assistant at Kyoto University, where he became a lecturer in 1950 and later an associate professor. In 1951, Morishima moved to Osaka University, where he became a professor of economics in 1963. Three years later, he joined the Institute of Social and Economic Research of Osaka University, founded in 1954 by Professor Takada, which had since become one of the leading research centers in economics worldwide.

International Recognition

In 1968, at the age of 45, Morishima was invited to teach at the University of Essex in the United Kingdom, and finally, in 1970, he joined the London School of Economics. In 1965, Morishima became the first Japanese person to head the Econometric Society, with strong support from the British economist John Hicks. He initiated a project that led to the establishment of the Suntory-Toyota Foundation and the Suntory and Toyota International Centre for Economic and Related Disciplines (STICERD) at the London School of Economics. Morishima served as the first chairman of the STICERD board. In 1991, he was elected an Honorary Fellow of the London School of Economics.

Legacy and Demise

Mitiyo Morishima passed away on July 13, 2004, just a few days before his 81st birthday. Throughout his career, Morishima made significant contributions to the field of economics, particularly in the areas of econometrics and general equilibrium theory. His work continues to inspire and influence economists worldwide.
