Biography of Mickey Carroll

Early Life and Career

Mickey Carroll, an American actor, was born in a family of Italian immigrants. From a young age, he had a passion for performing and often admired street carnival acts. He participated in amateur contests and earned a decent income from his talent. He later joined the Fox Theater in St. Louis, where he learned the art of dance. At the age of nine, Mickey stopped growing, but his enthusiasm for acting remained. He continued his acting career with the guidance of his six-foot-tall brother, performing in vaudeville shows as an actor, singer, and emcee. He appeared in radio commercials for "Call for Philip Morris" at the age of seventeen and performed in various shows with Mae West at eighteen. Mickey also worked as an emcee in several famous Chicago clubs owned by legendary American gangster, Al Capone.

The Wizard of Oz and Later Career

In 1939, Mickey was invited to Hollywood to play the role of the Munchkin Town Crier in "The Wizard of Oz." He became well-known for his purple cloak with a yellow flower sticking out of his striped costume. He later portrayed an extra soldier of the Munchkin tribe and became one of the violinists accompanying Dorothy on her journey to the Emerald City. After "The Wizard of Oz," Mickey focused primarily on voice acting in films and vaudeville shows. He also performed in presidential campaigns for Franklin Roosevelt and Harry Truman. Mickey had the opportunity to work on radio projects with famous personalities such as George Burns, Gracie Allen, Jack Benny, and Al Jolson.

Later Years and Legacy

In the mid-1940s, Mickey moved to St. Louis, Missouri, and pursued a family business. Although fame did not come immediately, Mickey had numerous opportunities following the success of "The Wizard of Oz." He was invited to various parades, national radio and television shows, and became a sought-after autograph signer. He dedicated a significant amount of time to various charitable events and organizations, including the Amanda Keats Memorial Scholarship Fund, Adoption Exchange, Basket of Hope, Albert Pujols Family Foundation, The Backstoppers Corporation, Special Olympics, National Kidney Foundation, and many more. Mickey's work in entertainment and charitable organizations made him highly renowned. He was not only known as an actor but also as a great example of perseverance and hard work. Mickey spent most of his life in St. Louis and continued his charitable projects after retirement. He often supported local police officers, their families, and children in need, particularly the St. Louis Children's Hospital. He was also a passionate sports fan and frequently incorporated local teams into his projects. Mickey Carroll passed away in his sleep on May 7, 2009, in Crestwood, Missouri. He was buried at a cemetery in St. Louis, Missouri.
