Sonia Braga, a Brazilian actress, was born as Sonia Maria Campos. From the age of 14, she appeared on television in soap operas. With her fiery temperament and attractiveness, she quickly became a television star. In 1977, she landed the lead role in the film adaptation of Jorge Amado's novel "Dona Flor and Her Two Husbands" (Doсa Flor E Seus Dois Maridos), directed by Bruno Barreto. The film was a huge success and brought international fame to the actress.

She also starred in the less successful adaptation of Amado's "Gabriela" (Gabriela, 1983) alongside Marcello Mastroianni. Braga's characters often find meaning in love, such as the seeker of sensual pleasures in the scandalous film "Lady On The Bus" (1978), and the emotionally focused heroine in "I Love You" (1980) directed by Arnaldo Jabor, known for experimental filmmaking.

Braga made her debut in an English-language film with Hector Babenco's "Kiss of the Spider Woman" (1985), where she portrayed three different characters.
