Blessed Sister Maria Paschalis Kowalska
Early Life and VocationBlessed Sister Maria Paschalis Kowalska was born on January 23, 1923, in Poland. On January 23, 1923, she joined the Capuchin Poor Clares monastery in Przasnysz.
Monastic Life
In 1924, Sister Kowalska took her first temporary vows, and on July 26, 1926, she made her perpetual vows. Within the monastery, she served as a librarian, sacristan, and mistress of novices.
Martyrdom
On April 2, 1941, Sister Kowalska and 36 other nuns were arrested by the Gestapo. They were interned in a concentration camp in Dzialdowo. While imprisoned, Sister Kowalska contracted tuberculosis and succumbed to the disease on July 25, 1941.
Beatification
On June 13, 1999, Sister Kowalska was beatified by Pope John Paul II as one of the 108 Polish Martyrs of World War II. Her feast day is celebrated on June 12.
