Early Life and Musical Training
Spanish Conductor with German EducationLorenzo Gómez Martínez was born into a musical family in Granada, Spain. His father was a professor in the Granada Orchestra, and his mother was a pianist. From a young age, Gómez Martínez expressed a strong desire to become a conductor.
At age five, he passed the entrance exam for the Victoria Eugenia Conservatory of Music in Granada. In 1957, at age seven, he made his conducting debut and not only led the orchestra profesores stably but also corrected errors in the score.
At thirteen, Gómez Martínez became a piano professor at the Granada Conservatory of Music. At seventeen, he was awarded the "Extraordinary Prize" in composition at the Madrid Conservatory of Music. In 1964, he moved to Madrid, where he obtained a First Class Degree and the Conservatory Prize in his final year.
Orchestral and Choral Conducting
Gómez Martínez continued his studies in orchestral and choral conducting in Vienna under Hans Swarowsky. He graduated with honors at age 21, receiving the Austrian Ministry of Education and Science Prize.
Conducting Career
International EngagementsGómez Martínez's conducting debut took place in Sankt Pölten, Austria, in 1973. He went on to conduct in Lucerne and Berlin, where he led a performance of Beethoven's "Fidelio." In Spain, he made his debut at the Granada International Festival of Music and Dance in 1975.
His career led him to become principal conductor and artistic director of numerous international orchestras, including the Vienna State Opera (1976-1982), the Symphony Orchestra of Spanish Radio and Television (1984-1987), the Basque Orchestra (1989-1993), the Hamburg Symphony Orchestra (1992-2000), the Orquesta de Valencia (1997-2004), and the Easter Festival Orchestra in Bayreuth (from 2004).
Composing Career
Works for Orchestra and SoloistsIn addition to his conducting, Gómez Martínez pursued a career as a composer. He often composed during breaks between concerts and on flights.
His notable works include "Suite Burlesca" (1972), "Sinfonía del Descubrimiento" (1992), "Five Songs on Poems by Alonso Gamo" (1996), "Sinfonía del Agua" (2007), "Morning Dawn" (2010), and his only opera, "Atallah."
Legacy
Lorenzo Gómez Martínez passed away in Malaga, Spain, on August 4, 2024, at the age of 74. He left behind a rich legacy as a conductor and composer who made significant contributions to the world of classical music.
