Vasco de Cabeza de Balboa: A Spanish Chronicler of the Golden Age

Born sometime around 1530 or 1535, Vasco de Cabeza de Balboa was a Spanish priest and chronicler renowned for his work "Miscelánea Antártica".

A Military Career

As the grandnephew of explorer Vasco Núñez de Balboa, Cabeza de Balboa initially pursued a military career. He fought in the wars of France and the Netherlands, serving under Prince Manuel Filiberto of Savoy, Count Egmont, and Rodrigo de Basan. He was among the victorious forces at the Battle of Gravelines in 1558.

A Religious Life

Returning to Malaga around 1565 or 1566, Cabeza de Balboa joined the Augustinian Order. Inspired by a desire to spread the Catholic faith, he traveled to India in 1566. In Bogota, he consulted with conquistador Gonzalo Jiménez de Quesada about the origins of the indigenous people.

The "Miscelánea Antártica"

In 1573, Cabeza de Balboa resided in Potosi and began working on his famous chronicle in Quito. He pacified the province of Esmeraldas and served as vicar of Avila. In 1578, he faced an indigenous rebellion while governing the province of Quijos but successfully negotiated a peace.

A Missionary in Peru and Bolivia

Upon presenting himself to Viceroy Martin Enríquez in Lima in 1580, Cabeza de Balboa secured a clerical position in the village of San Juan in the Ica Valley. He gathered information for his chronicle through travels and spent three years in Ecuador. As a dedicated missionary, he served as a priest in Camata, evangelizing the indigenous population of the Carbaya province.

Later Years and Death

On September 11, 1594, Cabeza de Balboa resided in the village of San Adrián de Chipoco in the province of Chunchos. The exact date and circumstances of his death remain unknown.
