Hero of the Great Patriotic War
Childhood and YouthMikhail Zakharovich Bondarenko was born into a peasant family in the Ukraine on an unknown date. He joined the Komsomol in 1940. After completing his seven-year education, he moved to Kiev to study at a vocational school and later worked as a blacksmith.
Military Career
In 1936, Bondarenko was sent to aviation school upon the recommendation of the Komsomol. He had already become an experienced attack aircraft pilot by the outbreak of the Great Patriotic War.
During the war, Bondarenko commanded a flight squadron and later became the squadron commander of the 198th Attack Aviation Regiment. He flew 230 combat missions, destroying approximately 20 enemy aircraft on airfields and two in aerial combat. He was also credited with destroying 20 enemy aircraft that were parked on airfields.
Notable Achievements
On June 6, 1942, Bondarenko was awarded the title of Hero of the Soviet Union for his outstanding courage and heroism in combat. On August 24, 1943, he was awarded a second Gold Star medal for his further exploits on the front lines. He was also honored with many other orders and medals for his bravery and skill.
Legendary Exploits
Bondarenko's actions during a mission to destroy an enemy airfield near Orel in August 1942 are particularly noteworthy. Despite being outnumbered and heavily outnumbered, Bondarenko and his group successfully carried out the attack, destroying approximately 20 enemy aircraft.
On another occasion, Bondarenko assisted in the rescue of a pilot whose plane had been shot down in enemy territory. He landed his own aircraft under enemy fire and picked up the pilot, successfully returning him to safety.
Death and Legacy
Mikhail Zakharovich Bondarenko died tragically in July 1947, bringing to an end the life of a courageous attack pilot and exceptional commander. However, his memory and legacy continue to live on in the annals of Soviet aviation history.
