Mihail Jora: Romanian Conductor and Composer
Mihail Jora (1891-1971) was a Romanian conductor and composer of Armenian descent.
Early Life and Education
Born in Romania to Armenian parents, Jora studied at the Leipzig Conservatory under Max Reger and Robert Teichmüller.
Conducting Career
In 1928, Jora became the conductor of the Bucharest Radio Orchestra, leading it until 1933. Romanian violinist Stefan Gheorghiu made his debut under Jora's baton.
Teaching and Administrative Roles
From 1929 to 1962, Jora was a professor at the Bucharest Conservatory. In 1944, he became vice-president of the Romanian Composers' Society.
Political Challenges and Rehabilitation
After the establishment of a socialist regime in Romania, Jora faced official criticism for his alleged "formalism." However, these accusations were lifted after 1953.
Compositions
Jora's musical output includes a symphony, two orchestral suites, four ballets, and a significant body of chamber, choral, and vocal works.
Legacy
Mihail Jora's legacy is honored by the Philharmonic Orchestra of Bacau, named after him, and the concert hall-studio of the Bucharest Radio.
