Early Life and Education

Mikhail G. Kurlov was born into a military family and completed his high school education in 1878 at Vyatka Gymnasium. He entered the Medical-Surgical Academy in 1878 and graduated with honors in 1883.

Medical Career

In 1886, Kurlov earned his doctorate in medicine with a dissertation titled "Assimilation and Metabolism of Nitrogenous Substances in the Consumption of Debow." He was sent abroad to study, where he worked with prominent professors in Munich, Berlin, and elsewhere.

Academic Achievements

Upon returning to Russia, Kurlov became an associate professor in the clinic of internal diseases. In 1888, he published an article on the curability of pulmonary tuberculosis. In 1890, he was appointed Professor of Private Pathology and Therapy at Tomsk University.

Leadership in Tomsk

From 1890 to 1929, Kurlov headed the Department of Therapy at Tomsk University. He made significant contributions to hematology, developed a classification of mineral waters, and established the Tomsk Bacteriological Institute.

Contributions to Medicine and Public Health

Kurlov was the first president of the Tomsk branch of the All-Russian League for the Fight against Tuberculosis and led the observance of White Daisy Day in Tomsk. He also initiated the establishment of the "Gorodok" children's anti-tuberculosis sanatorium.

Community Involvement

From 1892 to 1920, Kurlov founded and led the Tomsk Community of Sisters of Mercy, providing medical care and community services.

Academic Publications

Kurlov published over 20 works in Russian and German on internal diseases and bacteriology. His research on simplifying the Kjeldahl-Borodin method for determining nitrogen in organic matter was widely recognized.

Legacy as University Rector

As the first elected rector of the Imperial Tomsk University from 1903 to 1906, Kurlov played a pivotal role in its administration and development.
