Early Life and Career

Malkhaz A. Lakerbai was born on January 6 (19), 1901, in Merheuli, now part of Gulripshi District, Abkhazia. He began writing in 1919 and co-edited the first Abkhaz Soviet newspaper, "Apsny Kapsh," from 1921 to 1925.

Education and Military Service

Lakerbai graduated from the Law and Economics Faculty of Tbilisi Polytechnic Institute in 1929. He then completed the Higher Screenwriting Courses in Moscow in 1937. He served in the Great Patriotic War (1941-1945).

Literary Achievements

Lakerbai is known for his comedies, including "Descendant of Gech" (1939) and "In the Ravine of Sabida" (1940), as well as his historical drama "Dkanakay" (1946-1947). He also wrote librettos for operas, operettas, and musical comedies.

Novellas and Legacy

Lakerbai's novels, including "The Hunter in the Valley" and "The Old Man and the Sea," are widely considered his most significant contributions. They are concise, full of humor, and reflect the life of the Abkhaz people both before and after the October Revolution.

Death and Impact

Malkhaz A. Lakerbai passed away on October 15, 1965, in Moscow. He remains a celebrated figure in Abkhaz and Soviet literature, his works continuing to entertain and inspire readers to this day.
