Octavian Goga: Romanian Nationalist and Politician
Octavian Goga, a Romanian poet, playwright, and academic, was a prominent figure in Romanian politics during the interwar period. He was also known for his ultra-nationalist and anti-Semitic views.
Early Life and Education
Goga was born in Rașinari, Transylvania, in 1881. He studied at the University of Budapest, where he became involved in the Romanian nationalist movement in Transylvania. He was arrested several times by the Hungarian authorities before the unification of Transylvania with Romania.
Political Career
In 1920 and 1926, Goga served as Minister of Arts and Minister of the Interior in General Averescu's government. In 1935, he founded the pro-fascist National Christian Party. He held leadership positions in several Romanian banks and monopolies, which connected him to foreign capital.
Prime Minister and Fascist Policies
From December 1937 to February 1938, Goga served as Prime Minister. His government pursued a nationalist and pro-fascist agenda, aligning itself with Nazi Germany in foreign policy. He enacted anti-Semitic laws, depriving Jews of Romanian citizenship.
