Early Career and European SuccessMikaël Granlund is a professional Finnish hockey player who currently plays for the Minnesota Wild in the National Hockey League (NHL). His journey began in Oulun Kärpät, where he spent two seasons from 2007 to 2009. During this time, Granlund showcased his exceptional talent, averaging over a point per game and earning a spot on the league's All-Star team in 2009.
SM-liiga Debut and Contract Dispute
Granlund made his professional debut in the SM-liiga during the 2009-2010 season at the age of 17. However, his promising start was marred by a contract dispute. Granlund claimed that his four-year contract with Kärpät was invalid due to lack of compensation details and an altered insurance claim. This led to a legal battle that eventually resulted in a compromise and Granlund's release from the team.
Breakthrough Season and National Recognition
Following his transfer to HIFK Helsinki, Granlund had a breakout season in 2009-2010. He recorded 13 goals and 27 assists, becoming the league's top-scoring rookie and earning the Jarmo Wasama Memorial Trophy. Granlund also received the Raimo Kilpiö Trophy for receiving only two penalty minutes in 43 games. His impressive performance culminated in him being named Finland's Young Sportsman of the Year.
International Success with Junior Teams
Granlund represented Finland internationally as a junior, playing in the U18 and U20 World Championships in 2009 and 2010. In 2010, he led the U18 team in assists with nine and ranked third in the tournament with 13 points, helping Finland secure a second consecutive bronze medal. In the 2010 U20 Championship, Granlund was the team's leading scorer, but Finland placed fifth.
NHL Draft and Return to Europe
Granlund was widely considered the top European prospect in the 2010 NHL Entry Draft and was selected ninth overall by the Minnesota Wild. However, he returned to Helsinki for another year before joining the Wild. During this time, he played a key role in HIFK's victory in the Finnish Championship League.
International Debut and World Championship Triumph
In 2011, Granlund made his debut for the Finnish national team at the IIHF World Championship. His most memorable moment came in the semi-final against Russia, where he scored an astonishing goal in lacrosse-like fashion. Finland went on to win the tournament, defeating Sweden 6-1 in the final.
NHL Arrival and Ongoing Success
Granlund signed a three-year contract with the Minnesota Wild in 2012. Due to a lockout, he initially played in the American Hockey League (AHL) with the Houston Aeros. Upon the resolution of the lockout, Granlund joined the Wild and has remained an integral member of the team ever since.
