A Life-Altering Diagnosis

In the prime of his life, Mike Finch found himself grappling with relentless fatigue. As a husband and father of five young children, supporting the family farm took its toll. However, a family trip to the zoo in 2012 forced him to confront his debilitating symptoms.

A Chance Encounter and a Glimmer of Hope

A serendipitous encounter with a retired doctor led Mike to the Cancer Treatment Centers of America (CTCA), a beacon of hope for those battling colorectal cancer. Despite having an operation scheduled at a local hospital, Mike's curiosity prompted him to explore CTCA's approach.

Expert Care at CTCA

Upon arriving at CTCA's Chicago campus, Mike was greeted with a team of dedicated nurses and physicians. A colonoscopy revealed a concerning tumor in his small intestine. Determined to provide the best possible treatment, his surgeon, Dr. Charles Koomen Brown, recommended a more extensive procedure than initially planned.

HIPEC: A Cutting-Edge Treatment

During surgery, Dr. Brown discovered the extent of the tumor's spread, necessitating a specialized approach: Hyperthermic Intraperitoneal Chemotherapy (HIPEC). This innovative technique combines heat therapy and chemotherapy directly during surgery to target microscopic cancer cells.

Post-Surgery Complications and Return to CTCA

Despite a successful initial surgery, Mike experienced complications due to scar tissue obstruction. Faced with the need for additional surgery, he opted to return to CTCA for specialized care.

An Unwavering Commitment to Recovery

After a second surgery and prolonged hospital stay, Mike's recovery was arduous. With unwavering support from his wife and family, as well as the CTCA healthcare team, he persevered through chemotherapy and other treatments.

A Triumph Over Adversity

Today, Mike remains cancer-free and is eternally grateful for the exceptional care he received at CTCA. From the initial diagnosis to the comprehensive treatment and support, CTCA has been instrumental in his journey of recovery. Mike's story is a testament to the power of expert medical intervention, unwavering determination, and the love of family.
