After graduating from the University of Cambridge, Newell honed his skills in filmmaking at Granada Television. During his time there, he directed numerous television plays, including the comedy "Ready When You Are Mr. McGill" (1976).

Newell made his debut in feature films with the critically acclaimed movie "The Awakening" (1980), based on Bram Stoker's novel and aimed at the American market. He followed this with films such as "With a Stranger" (1985) and "The Good Father" (1986).

In 1991, Newell achieved commercial success with his romantic comedy "Enchanted April," starring Miranda Richardson, which won several Oscars. He continued his successful streak with the children's adventure film "Into the West" (1993) and the romantic comedy "Four Weddings and a Funeral" (1994), starring Hugh Grant and Andie MacDowell. Newell had the opportunity to direct one of the movies in the Harry Potter series, "Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire" (2005).
