Colonel of State Security
Mikhail Ivanovich Aghyants (1906-1959) was a colonel of state security and a key figure in the Soviet secret service.
Early Life and Education
Aghyants was born in Tiflis (now Tbilisi) on December 29, 1906. His family later moved to Yelizavetpol (now Ganja). He pursued self-education, developing a keen interest in politics and military affairs.
Military and Party Service
From 1920 to 1923, Aghyants served as a volunteer in the 3rd Rifle Regiment of the Azerbaijani Division. He then held positions in various party organizations, including the Komsomol and the Bolshevik Party.
Work in the Secret Service
In 1927, Aghyants joined the Armenian OGPU, the predecessor of the KGB, as a senior clerk. He served in the 2nd Azerbaijani Rifle Regiment from 1928 to 1929.
World War II
During World War II, Aghyants served on the Northern Front. In 1944, he was awarded the medal "For the Defense of the Soviet Arctic." In the fall of 1944, he was promoted to the rank of colonel.
Yalta Conference Security
In February 1945, Aghyants was assigned to protect the southern coast of Crimea, where the Yalta Conference was to be held. He developed a comprehensive security plan that ensured the safety of the delegates.
Post-War Activities
After the war, Aghyants was tasked with strengthening ties with Romanian communists and the Armenian Church. He also met with King Michael of Romania. In 1954, he was appointed Deputy Chairman of the KGB in the Armenian SSR.
Personal Life and Death
Aghyants married Anna Sergeevna Stepanyants in 1930. He died on August 21, 1959, from a heart attack.
