Early Life and Education

Mikhail Fedorovich Bondarenko was born on November 30, 1944, in the village of Krutoyarka, Kharkiv Oblast, Ukraine. From 1962 to 1963, he worked as a molder at the Malyshev Factory. In 1967, he graduated with honors from the Kharkiv Institute of Radio Electronics (HIRE) with a degree in automation and telemechanics.

Academic Career

Bondarenko began his academic career as a laboratory assistant and engineer at HIRE in 1967. In 1968 and 1969, he pursued graduate studies at HIRE. From 1969 to 1974, he held various teaching positions at HIRE, becoming a full professor in 1970. In 1974, he completed his Candidate of Technical Sciences degree with a dissertation on mathematical models of vision adaptation.

From 1974 to 1976, Bondarenko taught at the University of Oriente in Cuba. Upon his return in 1977, he became the Head of the Department of Computer Software at HIRE. In 1985, he obtained his Doctor of Technical Sciences degree with a dissertation on mathematical models of morphological and phonetic relations in automatic speech processing.

University Leadership

From 1986 to 1987, Bondarenko served as Dean of the Faculty of Computer Technology at HIRE. In 1994, he was appointed Rector of Kharkiv National University of Radio Electronics, a position he held until his death in 2013.

Scientific Accomplishments

Bondarenko's primary research interests lay in artificial intelligence and speech recognition. He founded a scientific school in artificial intelligence and authored over 360 scientific publications, 12 monographs, and several patents. His contributions led to the development of new mathematical models in various domains, including computer vision and speech processing. He mentored and supervised numerous doctoral and candidate students, fostering the growth of future scientists.

Academic Leadership and Honors

Bondarenko held editorial positions at several renowned scientific journals and was a member of the observation committee of the international symposium "East-West Design and Test." He served as the President of the Academy of Applied Radioelectronics and the Ukrainian Association of Distance Education. Furthermore, he received an honorary doctorate from the Moscow Engineering Physics Institute.

In 1996, Bondarenko was elected as a member of the Academy of Sciences of Higher Education of Ukraine, and in 2009, he was elected as a Corresponding Member of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine.

Awards and Recognition

Bondarenko was the recipient of numerous awards and honors, including the titles of "Man of the Year" by the Biographical Centre in Cambridge, England, and "Honored Citizen of Kharkiv." He was also recognized for his outstanding scientific contributions and educational leadership.

Personal Interests

Beyond his academic pursuits, Bondarenko was fluent in Spanish, German, and English. He possessed a deep appreciation for music and enjoyed playing the piano.
