Estonian-Soviet Economist Enno Bastein

Born in Estonia, Enno Bastein was a renowned economist who made significant contributions to the field. An academician of the Estonian Academy of Sciences and the International Academy of Management, he was also a member of the International Union of Economists.

Wartime Contributions

Bastein fought valiantly in World War II, serving in the air defense forces. His wartime experiences shaped his character and solidified his commitment to his country.

Academic Achievements

After graduating from Leningrad University with a degree in Economics, Bastein returned to Estonia and joined the faculty of Tartu University. He obtained his doctorate in Economics in 1965 and became a professor in 1966. His academic credentials culminated in his election to the Estonian Academy of Sciences in 1975.

Political and Diplomatic Service

Bastein's expertise extended beyond academia. He served as a People's Deputy of the USSR and a member of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR from 1989 to 1991. After Estonia's independence, he worked as an economic advisor at the Estonian embassy in Moscow from 1991 to 1995. His knowledge and diplomatic skills were instrumental in Estonia's economic transition.

Consulting and Publications

In retirement, Bastein continued to share his insights as a consultant on logistics and transit. He authored over 350 scientific publications, including 12 monographs on macroeconomic regulation and the transition to a market economy. His contributions to economic thought earned him recognition and awards.

Honors and Recognition

Bastein's wartime valor was acknowledged with the Order of the Patriotic War, second degree, and medals for military service and victory over Germany. His distinguished service to Estonia was honored with the Order of the White Star, third degree, in 2006.

Family Legacy

Bastein's son, Alexander Bronstein, is a successful mathematician and entrepreneur. He is a co-owner of "Sevzaprom" and a member of the Board of Directors of "SUAL-Holding." Bronstein played a significant role in the construction of the Tallinn Synagogue.
