Biography of Mohammad Hashem Pesaran

Mohammad Hashem Pesaran is a British economist of Iranian origin. He was born on March 30, 1946, in Shiraz, Iran. He obtained his Bachelor's degree in Economics from the University of Salford in Salford, England. He went on to earn his Ph.D. in Economics from Cambridge University.

Currently, Dr. Pesaran holds the position of Professor of Economics at Cambridge University and is a Fellow of Trinity College, Cambridge. Prior to this, he served as the Head of the Department of Economic Research at the Central Bank of Iran and was the Deputy Minister of Education in Iran. He has also taught economics and served as the Director of the Applied Econometrics Program at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). Additionally, he has been a visiting professor at the Institute of Advanced Studies in Vienna, the University of Pennsylvania, and the University of Southern California.

Contributions and Achievements

Dr. Pesaran is a member of the British Academy, the Econometric Society, and the Journal of Econometrics. He has been recognized with several prestigious awards, including the George Sell Prize from the Institute of Petroleum in 1990, the Royal Economic Society Prize for the best article published in 'The Economic Journal' in 1990 and 1991, and the Econometric Reviews Award for the best article from 2002 to 2004 for his work on Long Run Structural Modeling.

He is one of the founders and serves as the chief editor of the Journal of Applied Econometrics. He has also been involved in the development of the econometric software 'Microfit' published by Oxford University Press. Dr. Pesaran has served on the Board of Directors of Acorn Investment Trust and Cambridge Econometrics. He is currently the honorary president of Cambridge Econometrics. From 1996 to 2000, he was a member of the advisory council for the World Bank for the Middle East and North Africa. He was also a founding member of the Oliver Wyman Institute until January 2000.

From 2000 to 2002, Dr. Pesaran served as the Vice President of Tudor Investment Corporation in Connecticut, USA, responsible for development and automated trading systems. In October 2004, he was appointed as the Director of USC College Institute for Economic Policy Research.

Dr. Pesaran has published over 130 articles in leading academic journals in the fields of econometrics, empirical macroeconomics, and the Iranian economy. He is also an expert in the economics of the Middle East and oil extraction.

Family

Dr. Pesaran has two children. His daughter, Evaleila Pesaran, teaches Political Science at Murray Edwards College and Pembroke College at Cambridge University. She is also the author of the book 'Iran's Struggle for Economic Independence'. His son, Bijan Pesaran, works as a neurologist at a research center in New York University.
