Early Life and Education

Mikhail Archilovich Gomiashvili was born on March 21, 1961, in Tbilisi, Georgia, to a family of artists. His father, Archil Mikhailovich Gomiashvili, was a renowned actor best known for his role as Ostap Bender in the film adaptation of "The Twelve Chairs." Mikhail's mother, Liana Manjavidze, was also an actress.

As a child, Mikhail attended Tbilisi School #53 for only a year before joining his father on the set of "The Twelve Chairs," where he made a cameo appearance. He later transferred to Moscow School #64, but his attendance was irregular, and he struggled to connect with his classmates. Upon returning to Georgia, he enrolled in Tbilisi School #51, where he continued to experience conflicts.

Despite his rebellious nature, Mikhail harbored a passion for acting. He applied to the Shota Rustaveli Georgian State Theatre Institute but was initially rejected due to his poor grades and lack of experience. However, he eventually gained admission in 1981 and graduated in 1985.

Theatre Career

In 1988, Mikhail made his stage debut as the lead in Timur Chkheidze's production of "The Eternal Husband" at the Kote Marjanishvili Theatre. His father attended the premiere and acknowledged his son's talent. Mikhail's theatrical career continued to flourish, and he became a member of the Marjanishvili Theatre's ensemble in 1997.

Film Career

Mikhail's first significant film role came in 1992 with "The Trap," a two-part Georgian film. He gained further recognition for his portrayal of Major Sharabidze in Vasily Chiginsky's "First After God." In addition to his work in Georgian cinema, Mikhail also appeared in international productions such as "The Zone of Conflict" (2007), "5 Days of August" (2011), "Hostages" (2017), and "Defenders" (2021).

Mikhail's acting style was characterized by his intense and immersive performances. He did not memorize lines but rather drew upon his own experiences to embody his characters. This approach led to memorable performances, including his portrayal of the amnesiac Ksenofon in Yevgeny Shelyakin's "Happy-End."

Personal Life

Mikhail Gomiashvili married several times throughout his life. He had two children: a daughter, Natalia, born in 1979, and a son, Archil, born in 1989. In 2010, he married costume designer Keti Kalandadze.
