Mikhail Rashkovytsky: A Renowned Ukrainian Art Specialist
Mikhail Rashkovytsky, a prominent Ukrainian art historian, art critic, and curator, has made significant contributions to the art scene.
Early Life and Education
In 1978, Rashkovytsky graduated from the Faculty of Philology at Odessa State University. Subsequently, in 1992, he completed the Faculty of Art Theory and History at the I. E. Repin Institute of the USSR Academy of Arts in Saint Petersburg.
Museum and Administrative Roles
From 1982 to 1996, Rashkovytsky served as an employee of the Odessa Art Museum, eventually becoming Head of Exhibitions and Scientific and Educational Departments. During the early 1990s, Odessa experienced a surge in the establishment of contemporary art institutions. In 1993, Rashkovytsky became the President of the "New Art" Association, a leading organization in this movement.
Additionally, Rashkovytsky led the "Soros Center for Contemporary Art - Odessa" from 1996 to 2000. Since 2002, he has been the curator of the "Migdal-Shorashim" Museum of Odessa Jewish History.
Contributions to Art Exhibitions
Rashkovytsky's expertise extended to exhibition curation. In the years 2010-2013, he served as a consultant for Odessa galleries, including "Khudpromo," "NT-Art Gallery," and "Dymchuk Gallery." Furthermore, he was an active member of the curatorial team for the 3rd, 4th, and 5th Odessa Biennials of Contemporary Art from 2012 to 2017.
Venetian Biennale Involvement
In 2014, Rashkovytsky joined the curatorial group for the Ukrainian National Pavilion at the Venice Biennale. However, in 2015, he withdrew from the group to protest the policies of the Ministry of Culture's commissioner for the Ukrainian Pavilion.
