Nicolas Dupont-Aignan: A Political Trailblazer
Early Life and EducationBorn on March 7, 1961, in Paris, Nicolas Dupont-Aignan initially carried the surname Dupont. He later added his mother's maiden name, Enjanan. Dupont-Aignan's education culminated in degrees from the Paris Institute of Political Studies (1982), the University of Paris-Dauphine (1985), and the National School of Administration (1989).
Political Beginnings
Dupont-Aignan's political career began in 1995 as an advisor to Environment Minister Michel Barnier. The same year, he was elected mayor of Yerres in the Essonne department. In 1997, he became a deputy in the French National Assembly, representing Essonne.
Rise of "Debout la République"
In 1999, Dupont-Aignan founded the movement "Debout la République" (Stand Up, Republic), which later became "Debout la France" (Stand Up, France). He joined the Union for a Popular Movement (UMP) in 2002.
Exit from UMP and Presidential Aspirations
In 2007, Dupont-Aignan left the UMP to run in the presidential election, but later withdrew due to lack of funding. In 2008, he became the leader of "Debout la République," which he later renamed "Debout la France."
2017 Presidential Campaign
In 2016, Dupont-Aignan declared his candidacy for the 2017 presidential election. His platform included opposition to the TTIP and CETA trade agreements and a proposal for a comprehensive peace treaty between Europe and Russia.
Dupont-Aignan finished sixth in the first round of voting with 4.7% of the vote. He supported Marine Le Pen in the second round, citing her commitment to appointing him prime minister if elected.
Post-Presidential Career
Dupont-Aignan resigned from his positions as mayor of Yerres and president of the Val d'Yerres-Val de Seine agglomeration community in 2017. In 2018, he co-founded the political movement "Les amoureux de la France, le pays avant les partis" (Lovers of France, Country before Parties).
