Early Life and Education
Viktor Vladimirovich Tikhomirov was born on October 23, 1918, in the Dubna railway station to a family of railway workers. In 1935, he graduated from secondary school No. 17 in Tula and enrolled in the Tula Mechanical Institute the same year.
Academic Experience
In 1940, Tikhomirov graduated from the Tula Mechanical Institute and became a design engineer at a defense plant in Perm. From 1948 to 1951, he pursued studies at the Military-Industrial Academy in Kuntsevo.
Key Positions
In November 1951, Tikhomirov was appointed head of the chief designer's department at the second plant of Factory No. 586, which was later transformed into Factory No. 933. In September 1957, he was named chief designer of the OKB (Design Bureau) of Factory No. 933, a position he held until his passing in 1978.
Contribution to Radar Systems
As the main designer of receiving and transmitting devices for radar systems in air defense, missile defense, and space surveillance, Tikhomirov played a pivotal role in the development of numerous cutting-edge radar systems, including the B-200, Dnepr, Argun, Don-2N, Darya, Volga, and the Duga over-the-horizon radar.
Honours and Awards
Tikhomirov's contributions to radar technology were recognized through a series of prestigious awards, including the Order of Lenin in 1956, the Order of the Red Banner of Labour three times (in 1966, 1971, and 1974), and other medals.
Legacy
Viktor Vladimirovich Tikhomirov passed away on September 17, 1978, while on his way to work. He was buried in Dnipropetrovsk. As a pioneering innovator in the field of radar technology, his legacy continues to inspire generations of engineers and scientists.
