Early Life and Military Service
Born in Krasnoarmeysk, Ukraine, Mikhail Volynets attended a mining vocational school from 1974 to 1975. After graduating, he fulfilled his military service from 1975 to 1977.
Career in Mining and Union Leadership
Upon completing his military service, Volynets began his career in the mining industry as an underground electrician and later advanced to the position of section foreman at the Stakhanov Mine under the Krasnoarmeyskugol Production Association. In 1985, he became the chairman of the Stakhanov Mine's trade union committee.
Volynets's union activism led him to become the chairman of the Interregional Association of Independent Miners' Unions in 1991. In February 1995, he assumed the presidency of the Independent Miners' Union of Ukraine (NPGU). He also became the head of the Confederation of Free Trade Unions of Ukraine (KVPU).
Political Career
Volynets's union leadership propelled him into politics. He was elected to the Verkhovna Rada, Ukraine's parliament, in April 2002 as a member of Yulia Tymoshenko's electoral bloc. He served on the Committee for Fuel and Energy Complex, Nuclear Policy, and Nuclear Safety.
In May 2006, Volynets was re-elected to the Verkhovna Rada and rose to the position of Deputy Chairman of the Committee for Fuel and Energy Complex, Nuclear Policy, and Nuclear Safety.
Awards and Recognition
Volynets has been recognized for his contributions to the mining industry and labor movement. He is a recipient of the "Miner's Glory" badge and the George Meany-Lane Kirkland Award. In January 2007, he was awarded the Order of Merit of the Third Degree.
Personal Life
Volynets is married to Yulia Nikolaevna and has two children, Andrey (born 1979) and Sofia (born 1984).
