Mikko Koivu is a Finnish professional ice hockey player, born on March 12, 1983, in Turku, Finland. He comes from a hockey family, with his older brother Saku Koivu being a former captain of the Montreal Canadiens and Anaheim Ducks. Their father, Jukka Koivu, was also a coach for the TPS team.
Early Career
Mikko began his professional career at the age of 17, playing for the TPS team in the Finnish hockey league. He caught the attention of the Minnesota Wild scout, Goran Stubb, who called him the "best playmaker in the Finnish league". Before joining the NHL, Mikko completed his mandatory six-month military service and took the time to recover from several injuries to his face, shoulder, and leg.
NHL Career
In 2001, Mikko was drafted by the Minnesota Wild in the first round, sixth overall. He spent three seasons with the TPS team before making his NHL debut in the 2005-2006 season. Throughout his career with the Wild, Mikko has served as an assistant captain and was later named the team's captain. He has been a consistent contributor, earning numerous points and assists.
International Achievements
Mikko Koivu has represented Finland in various international tournaments. He won a bronze medal at the 2008 World Championships in Halifax, a silver medal at the 2007 World Championships in Moscow, and a bronze medal at the 2006 World Championships in Riga. He also earned a silver medal at the 2006 Winter Olympics in Turin and a silver medal at the 2004 World Cup in Canada.
Personal Life
Mikko Koivu is known for his close friendship with fellow hockey player Tuomo Ruutu, who plays for the Carolina Hurricanes. They have played together on the Finnish national team and were teammates during the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver. Mikko was honored on the cover of the Finnish version of the video game "NHL 10" and was voted the best Finnish player in the NHL.
