Mile Stojkoski: Macedonian Athlete and Disability Advocate

Early Life and Accident

Mile Stojkoski, a Macedonian athlete and disability advocate, was born in Prilep, Macedonia. After earning a degree in economics, he worked for a local utility company. To improve his productivity, Stojkoski used a small motorcycle to navigate the city. However, on September 8, 1996, he was involved in a devastating accident.

Physical and Psychological Rehabilitation

Despite being paralyzed below the waist and confined to a wheelchair, Stojkoski refused to let his disability define him. He embarked on an unconventional rehabilitation plan, engaging in various sports, including table tennis, shooting, swimming, kayaking, and gymnastics.

Ultramarathon Accomplishments

Stojkoski became renowned for his participation in ultramarathons. Using a standard wheelchair, he covered extraordinary distances, raising awareness for disability issues and inspiring others. His belief that a positive attitude and willpower can help individuals overcome challenges became a cornerstone of his advocacy.

Motivational Journey

One of Stojkoski's motivational tactics was to use his regular wheelchair in ultramarathons, emphasizing the accessibility challenges faced by many wheelchair users. He also dedicated an annual marathon in honor of his late friend, musician Toše Proeski, from Prilep to Proeski's memorial in Krushevo.

Notable Campaigns

In 2005, Stojkoski collaborated with Polio Plus to gather signatures for a law to improve the rights of persons with disabilities in Macedonia. He traveled 1,500 kilometers and collected 19,000 signatures, although the law ultimately failed to pass parliament.

In 2007, Stojkoski embarked on a 15,300-kilometer ultramarathon spanning 31 countries, from Krushevo to Beijing. Aiming to establish a charity fund for disabled Macedonians, he encountered financial and visa obstacles, reaching only the Jordan-Syria border.

2009 and 2012 Ultramarathons

In 2009, Stojkoski undertook a 1,000-kilometer ultramarathon through 24 cities, raising awareness for disability issues in Macedonia. In 2012, he embarked on his 10th marathon and 5th ultramarathon, traveling 5,700 kilometers through 15 European countries en route to London for the Olympic Games.

Personal Life and Legacy

Mile Stojkoski currently resides in Prilep with his fiancée and daughter. His remarkable journey continues to inspire and empower individuals with disabilities worldwide.
